New technology came together to produce this sculpture. It's the first made with the form's supporting stakes placed outside the pile. New tools allowed for fast carving, and a level of complexity I'd never done before. My friend Rocket helped build the pile. I'd solved the technical problems we'd had on the last outing and everything went smoothlly. The sand was very good, and with two of us working the pile was solid. My idea was for wind and water. Starting from that, the rest developed in interesting ways: the parallel kinks in the long slot and supports. The sort of crowned top, rather than the more usual round top. It's named after another friend, who has encouraged me probably more than I know, to try different things. In this sculpture, her touch is in the rough textures made by leaving the toolmarks rather than rubbing them out.
I've only made three sculptures this big. It's six and a half feet tall and made of 30 cubic feet of sand using a smaller form atop the larger main form. Big sculptures are impressive and I like the human scale. My new tools enabled a different way of working, however, and I started thinking about smaller sculptures. Move roughly one-sixth as much sand, but get just as much detail. That revolution was still in the future when I built "Virginia," and this one will always be unique.
