In the background is the small volcano that covered this area with cinders. Natives in their seasonal wanderings lived here for part of the year and you can still find house rings. Fossil Falls, where prehistoric Owens Lake drained into China Lake, is behind me.
From the above display I chose one plant to photograph, but didn't do it quite right. I forgot to set a large lens aperture to make the background out of focus so the plant would stand out.
