California Wildflowers: Apricot Mallow

apmallo1.jpg

As is usual with desert plants, apricot mallow grows in different ways in different places. This bush is growing in Wildrose Canyon, where it gets some shade at morning and evening. It's also below a small steep arroyo so it gets more water.

These plants are in Owens Valley, near Fossil Falls. There's a small cinder cone north of here and lava covers the ground. Blasted by sun, getting little rain, this is a tough place for plants so they grow differently.
