Territorial Coots (slide 32)
I don't know what gets these birds so upset, but the one on the right, neck stretched out, furiously trying to get at the one on the left. He held off all comers until apparently boredom set in. Then he'd let others come by without bothering them, until for unknown reasons he'd get upset again and start chasing them off. I wonder what was going on inside that feathered brain. Doubtless it's very serious cootly business. Mirjam tells me they do the same thing in Holland.
These birds dive and work their way along the bottom, looking for bugs in the mud. You can follow their progress by watching the line of bubbles coming to the surface. They stay down an amazingly long time.
