Rippled Water (slide 21)
This was shot from the top of a rock knob a short walk from Mulholland Highway near Triunfo Pass, looking west. The pass is a Chumash route, not an anglo one; the current road crosses the range not by the original pass, which is out of view to the right, but through the gap pictured here.
In the distance you can see the Channel Islands, a national park. This part of the California coast is somewhat protected by the islands, and is a popular shipping route. Tankers are the most common, bringing Los Angeles' essential import: oil from Alaska. The Channel Islands are for sailors, divers and hikers, who come to see the wildlife.
