Over the Pacific (slide 2)

Looking west from Rambla Pacifico about halfway up the mountain. The Santa Monica Mountains one of the few notable east-west mountain ranges in the United States. They're made of many kinds of sedimentary rock pushed arond in a long history of tectonic abuse. The ecosystem is also rare, being chaparral. The main characteristic is that no rain falls from late April through September, so the plants hang onto life tenaciously and don't give up water.
