General Notes:Tide required the early start; we're getting close to the time to swap weekends. Good sand was in a thick layer under about five inches of overburden. The day was bright and sunny. About time. I like rain, but it's nice not to shiver. The new Back Saver Sand Cart's first employment was in hauling water for building the foundation. Four buckets at once, easy as you please, up the beach bouncing on those two fat tires. Hauling four buckets of sand from the borrow pit took more work but was still easier than carrying two buckets in hand. Hooray! It works! Building this was last weekend's project, done between rainstorms that wiped out the planned quick sculpture. |
Design Notes:I had no real idea, having not thought much beyond wondering if the cart would work. Faced with a tall pile I now had to figure out a plan.Well, why not start with a cylinder? I've been working to get away from the cylindric shape, but why fight it? It is a cylinder to start with, so let's try working with that. The sand was beautiful, silky, soft, a delight to touch. This encouraged rubbing subtle curves into broad surfaces, and sharp edges. But, working here and there, I lost track of the overall effect and ended up with something less than I'd hoped for. Still, some parts were nice. I liked the narrow opening on the southwest; this was hard to carve, but interesting to look at. The narrow spindle-shaped space on the northwest was also interesting, and provided a good termination to the bulging element to the right. |
