In the grip of more ideas than I could possibly make, I gather my kit and head for the beach. Fatigue might be an effective filter to keep the sculpture simple.

1. Enthusiasm

The coming tide is relatively low, permitting construction not far from the water. The sand is decent; I sample around trying to find the best but it's all about the same. I end up with more sand than necessary for a winter pile. Maybe it's the short haul, but now I have to deal with a tall sculpture on a short day.

2. Carving

This started out as another try at the evolute panel idea, with a hole in it to allow viewing of the interior. But the panel took on interesting changes in direction and shape and wound up becoming a leaf-like panel whose west edge continued up and over the top. A long thin leg met that edge, defining a narrow space east of the leaf. I liked this, and amplified it with texture that gave it somewhat of a butterfly-wing feel.

The north side is a problem. The top arch has to go someplace but I'd prefer that it take a route that's more interesting than usual. I have, however, designed myself into a corner. We'll have to make do with decoration, so I bring the arch down nearly to the bottom, then cut deep bays into the leg's west edge. These were intended to turn into scallops but they wound up gaining holes through to the interior and other decorations. Another butterfly wing design.

3. Conclusion

The sun calls time when there's still some work to do. A couple of entries need exits, and some more detail wouldn't hurt, but cleaning it up will take time. At the end, when I'm giving it the final spraying, I see a need for one more detail and bring a line down and around.

Bright sunlight floods the beach even this close to sunset. The light becomes a little softer but shadows are still strong. Everything is painted gold. Sunset watchers amble along the expanse of sand. One man has a kite but it only flies when he runs; he and his children still laugh. It's a good day.
