Again the storm drain project was silent. The stump of yesterday's sculpture was on a promontory left by the previous tide; all the good native sand was gone. I placed this one below the promontory and used the stump as a stepstool. The energy saving tricks helped and I got the pile made in decent time. Rich arrived later in the afternoon when the sculpture was well established. As the day progressed I got the feeling that everything I touched would turn to gold. This feeling usually precedes complete construction failure but this sculpture held up due to the good sand. Still, I shot a safety round of photos. I was nervous about the clean-up. This proceeded without incident and I breathed a sigh of tired relief when it was still standing. Photography followed, after which Rich and I left due to cold.

Considering how hard I worked yesterday I felt good. Still, I figured a simple idea was best and ran some of them through the projector in my mind, settling on one that started with a smooth panel curving like a tree trunk to the top. There'd be balls on top to give it a sort of crown look. That collided with another simple idea and produced the starting point for this piece: the sliced curve near the bottom, with the two parts inside. The big panel on top started out smooth but later wanted elaboration. The whole thing grew from here, with even my mistakes working in the end. Amazing. A rare day, a rare sculpture. Shorter piles produce much less frustration on short winter days.
