The late start, for this time of year, was dictated by the tide. Recent storms had rearranged the beach, burying or removing the good sand, so I used the best I could find and packed it carefully in thin additions to the form.
The day was warm and sunny, which brought out lots of passersby. Most of them wanted to chat. My idea was for stacked "C" shapes but, as usual, the sculpture changed as I made it. In particular, I resisted the urge to make it symmetric by twisting the elements a bit. Some design problems came up but, with the time allowed by the relatively simple design and not having to carry sand, I looked at the sculpture carefully and then worked its elements together. I enjoyed being able to spend more time in design. The completed piece had an elegance that is rare in my sculpture. Everything fit well, and the strong, simple elements glowed in the afternoon light. It was popular with the passersby, too. The sunset watchers came out and stood around, awaiting the magic moment. When it came, it was punctuated by a rare very bright green flash. All in all, a delightful day. | ||||||||||
