From my 1996 notes:

The last two sculptures were frustratingly incomplete, so I still had a strong charge built up. Bruce met me on the beach, asking if I'd seen the L.A. Times article. Virginia and I had read it while munching on scones at the Broadway Deli. By the day's end I'd met about 15 people who came down because of Mary's article in the Metro section. One couple didn't know where the Breakwater was so they walked the beach until they found the site. John Schnurer, in town with a demonstrator vehicle detector, spent most of the day on the beach. He even made a pile with my short form and carvd a heart for Mother's Day.

Rich came down in the hot afternoon and photographed. Eventually the sea wind overwhelmed the high pressure and cooled the day. I made this pile using the short form and the trash can extension I'd first tried with 96F-8, where it proved to be too big in diameter. I trimmed it for this sculpture and it worked well but because it's floppy it's hard to keep in place until there's some sand inside. I also used the new box sand filter and the pile was very solid. Being nearly cylindric, it offered more design possibilities.

As I carved I thought the sculpture was another throwback. It didn't have any wild moves or dramatic textures, and it seemed pedestrian. Looking at the photographic proof sheet a few days later, I saw it differently. I like it. Nicely integrated, good curves, interesting. I'm glad I shot some photos on 120.
