"I was supposed to hike Saturday but was too tired from the all-day motorcycle ride Friday. Sunday's hike was cancelled so I headed for the beach. Built up on the flat, carrying sand from below the storm drain. The sand was very good, lacking the usual veins of coarse sand. The pile was very solid and had good horizons. Lots of folks stopped to talk: Oscar, a photographer; a bronze casting artisan; Skip, Meg and a friend who were interested in the Web page [the original, made by Don Tidwell in January]; Steve's friend from St. Louis; and Tim, in his usual gunching mood. The sculpture was great. It's the first small one I've finished to big-sculpture standards. Other little ones I've treated as sketches or throwaways, not worth the time to finish. That's changing. I spent about five hours carving and finishing this one. Lots of positive comments, too, more than usual."
"I was experimenting with horizontal elements. I had an idea but it sort of got involved with other things and changed into whimsical curves. A sort of jigsaw puzzle effect in places, with curves wrapped around the hollow inside, with their ends jointed."
