#19 Shaver ToolTop: original Bottom: #19B, with new blade |

This tool was designed to dig around corners and smooth the surfaces inside a sculpture. It has a comfortable handle, is pretty, and is well made. Unfortunately it just doesn't work. Oh, it will carve sand all right. It just does so slowly that I wind up not using it. It has proven useful for delicate outside smoothing, but I have better ways of doing that. It was a useful step in the evolution of tool making, because it showed that having an edge that projected adze-style back toward the user did make it easier to control. This also needed less pressure for carving. The scorp-style tools are the more practical outworking of this idea. I still carry this thing in my tool tub because I like the shape. I tried putting a new blade on it but the handle's strong curvature still makes it hard to use. Maybe a scorp-type blade would work better. |
